Background
Nobody would need a prelude to
environmental challenges staring at mankind. They essentially stem from either
human greed or inability to manage resources bestowed by nature.
Whilst most of the bestowed resources
are replenishable; there is a limit to
the rate at which nature can top up. What do we do when we outpace the natural
replenishable rate?
Dwindling resources throws open the
issue of amicable, equitable resource sharing. Imagine that you are one among
12 people trapped in a dysfunctional elevator with limited air supply.
Individual anxiety level and sensitivity shoots up. How do you think can group can cooperate to everyone's benefit?
Fortunately we are
still reasonably far from the time when air becomes scarce resource. But it is
not the case with water. The world is running out of fresh water, and the fight
to control it has already begun. Since food grains rest
on water bubbles, the cascading effect is much higher than anticipated. Our
world is closer to chaos that we think.
What are the rules
that govern water sharing? Do we have any? or are we beating around the bush in
darkness when the snake has sneaked out?
With this in background we students of M.Phil. Ecological Informatics,
Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management - Kerala (IIITM-K)
call upon the youth (students) for a dialogue on - "Sharing of Inappropriable
Natural Resources - Challenges and Promises".
